The City of Tupelo Planning Committee was created by the adoption of the current Development Code, which spells out in Section 3.2 the powers and duties of the Committee. These include overseeing the preparation of a comprehensive plan, recommendations on policies, ordinances, the zoning map, and amendments to the plan necessary to carry it out, and hearing applications for various types of approvals under the development code. Actions typically referred to the Committee include code text amendments, rezonings, planned unit developments, major subdivisions, major site plans, major conditional uses, variances, and appeals of administrative actions. The Committee may also be asked to advise or comment on other matters by the City Council. There are currently nine members of the Committee, appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council, serving four year terms.
